Promoting a positive risk culture

Overview

Culture: The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.

A positive risk culture is one where staff at every level appropriately manage risk as an intrinsic part of their day-to-day work. Such a culture supports an open discussion about uncertainties and opportunities, encourages staff to express concerns, and maintains processes to elevate concerns to appropriate levels.  

Strong leadership commitment and effective communication are crucial to building a positive risk culture. This course will provide practical strategies to gain commitment and influence a risk culture change within your organisation, including the development of a communications plan. 

Learning outcomes

  • To gain a broader understanding of how to promote a positive risk culture

  • Review and discuss a range of methods to gain executive commitment

  • Review and discuss a range of methods to bring risk management to the attention of your organisation and improve risk culture

  • Participate in the development of a communications plan

Risk Principles in Practice - Everyone's a Risk Manager

Overview

NSW public sector delivers a wide range of services to the community of NSW. The State Government recognises that sound risk management practice, by individual agencies and at a whole of sector level, supports transparent and systematic decision making and goes hand in hand with agency planning. By managing risk, the public sector maximises its ability to meet its objectives and deliver its services effectively and efficiently.

Learning outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand how to align risk management to the business planning and improvement cycle.

  • Understand risk management processes and tools.

  • Apply risk management processes to a public sector case study to be better equipped to apply in their organisation.

  • Adapt risk tools for use in their organisation.

  • Use tools to engage and communicate with stakeholders.

  • Be supported to try out selected tools in an action learning arrangement.

  • Build understanding of the relevance of the risk process to decision making using three questions – if what, so what, what then
