Risk Principles in Practice - Everyone's a Risk Manager

NSW public sector delivers a wide range of services to the community of NSW. The State Government recognises that sound risk management practice, by individual agencies and at a whole of sector level, supports transparent and systematic decision making. By managing risk, the public sector maximises its ability to meet its objectives and deliver its services effectively and efficiently.
Course Objectives
Provide participants with an overview of risk management principles aligned to the risk management standard (ISO 31000) and the NSW Internal Audit and Risk Management Policy (TPP15:03). Understand the role of risk management as a business enabler to support the achievement of NSW Government and organisational objectives. Integrate risk management into organisational planning processes. Apply contemporary risk processes in the NSW public sector.
This course has three sessions: Session 1: Explore and workshop risk management in the NSW Public Sector Session 2: Explore and workshop risk management and the risk process by applying a hypothetical case study Session 3: Apply selected tools in an action learning environment
Note: Prior to the session it would be beneficial to read your agency’s Risk Management policy and guidelines and be familiar with your strategic/ corporate objectives as these will form part of the discussion.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
  • Understand how to align risk management to the business planning and improvement cycle. Understand risk management processes and tools.
  • Apply risk management processes to a public sector case study to be better equipped to apply in their organisation.
  • Adapt risk tools for use in their organisation.
  • Use tools to engage and communicate with stakeholders.
  • Be supported to try out selected tools in an action learning arrangement.
  • Tools/ services to enhance workplace risk, health and safety performance.
  • Build understanding of the relevance of the risk process to decision making using three questions - if what, so what, what then.
Target audience
It is intended for people who would benefit from developing a background in risk management. Participants do not need to be risk practitioners. It is intended for people who would benefit from attending a foundational risk management course.
